WIPO General Assembly: Expectations loom over decisions on treaties for actors, reading disabled persons and genetic resources

Development Agenda committee mandates WIPO to examine Bolivia, Barbados, Suriname and Bangladesh prize proposals

December 2010 - 7:14On Friday, 26 November 2010, the 6th session of the WIPO Committee on Development Agenda and Intellectual Property approved a project entitled "Project on Open Collaborative Projects and IP-Based Models". As mentioned in KEI's previous posting on this subject, this project endeavors to implement Recommendation 36 of the Development Agenda which states:

General statement of Brazil to the 47th WIPO General Assemblies

The statement broached many topics including the treaty for the sharing of accessible works for persons who are blind or have other reading disabilities, the legitimate trade of generics and the Development Agenda.

Here below are the suggestions of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Member States (GRULAC) would like to be incorporated into the recommendation of the Working Group to the PCT Assembly.The Members of GRULAC that are contracting-parties to the PCT Treaty suggest the addition of the following elements into the recommendation of the Working Group to the PCT Assembly.
WIPO releases roster of its technical assistance consultants (2005-2008)

April 2009 - 5:30In preparation for the 3rd meeting of the WIPO Committee on Development and Intellectual Property (CDIP), WIPO published a 31 page document (CDIP/3/2) on March 18, 2009 listing a roster of consultants for technical assistance the Organization employed from January 1, 2005 to December 31, 2008. This is a welcome step in providing greater transparency into WIPO’s technical assistance activities.
Development Agenda discussions focus on costing of consultants and business analysts

The first meeting of this development committee (March 2008) examined Cluster A (Technical Assistance and Capacity Building) of the 45 approved Development Agenda recommendations.
New WIPO committee on Development Agenda gets underway
Submitted by thiru on 3. March 2008 - 16:12The newly created WIPO Committee on Development and Intellectual Property (CDIP) is meeting this week in Geneva from 3 March - 7 March 2008. The chair of the CDIP is Ambassador Trevor Clarke of Barbados. Today the discussion has focused mainly on the rules of procedure and modalities governing this Committee. Unfortunately, finding the 45 Development Agenda recommendations adopted at the WIPO General Assembly in September/October 2007 on the WIPO website is not easy.
WIPO Development Agenda: Language on open collaborative models in
Submitted by thiru on 15. June 2007 - 7:18We have heard that negotiations have finished on Cluster D and E were wrapped up last evening. Cluster C has one issue pending. As of 10 AM Geneva time, only the text of Cluster D was available. Particularly significant is the agreement on the text of having WIPO Member States exchange information on experiences on open collaborative projects such as the Human Genome Project. Also important was the agreement on language on impact assessment studies.
“Access to Knowledge” back in at WIPO
Submitted by James Love on 14. June 2007 - 4:54The negotiations on the development agenda text have progressed, and as of last evening, it appears as though the term “access to knowledge” is now without brackets. The relevant paragraph now reads as follows:
“To initiate discussions on how, within WIPO’s mandate, to further facilitate access to knowledge and technology for developing countries and LDCs to foster creativity and innovation and to strengthen such existing activities within WIPO.”
