EB 156: KEI statement on the Follow-up to the political declaration of the third high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases
Agenda item 7
We commend WHO’s decision to develop guidelines for the use of weight-loss drugs in low and middle-income countries.
WHO should also investigate measures to improve access to affordable generic versions of GPL-1 drugs. A novel approach is a pooled buyout of the patent rights, to benefit the WHO member states who finance the buyout.
The WHO should also develop a strategy to implement the WHO transparency resolution (WHA72.8), particularly as regards transparency of units sold, prices, revenues, trial costs and R&D subsidies for specific products, all highly important data for evidence based strategies to address equity and the design of cost effective innovation incentives.
