KEI brown bag lunch with Shira Perlmutter, January 27, 2012

On January 27, 2012, KEI will host a brown bag lunch with Shira Perlmutter. Shira was recently appointed the Administrator for Policy and External Affairs of USPTO. This position was most recently held by Albert Tramposch, who replaced Arti Rai, the first Obama appointee.

Shira has extensive experience in the public and private sector. Most recently Shira was Executive Vice President for Global Legal Policy for the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), after leaving a position as Vice President and Associate General Counsel for Intellectual Property Policy at Time Warner. Shira had earlier worked at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the U.S. Copyright Office. A graduate of Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania Law School, Shira was a member of the Obama Administration transition committee on intellectual property, and recently one of the leading candidates for the job of Register of Copyrights. Her brother Saul was a co-winner of the 2011 Nobel prize for physics.

At the Copyright Office, Shira advised Congress on the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 and served on the U.S. delegation that negotiated the WIPO Internet Treaties. (See this 1996 LOC press release) At USPTO, she will have responsibility for a wide range of domestic and international public policy, and will play a key role in the inter-agency reviews of the intellectual property chapter for the TPPA, the contents of the US Special 301 list, the WHO negotiations on intellectual property and innovation, and all WIPO negotiations.

The event will take place at the KEI offices, 1621 Connecticut Avenue, Suite 500, from 12:30pm to 2:30pm. This is an open event, but please RSVP by noon on January 26.
